The Sabotage Of Marsden’s Refining Capabilities

The story of a legal transformation from a multi-product producing refinery into a storage facility for imported refined fuel, is just that, a story. This is not the reality of the situation according to the competent operators who work there.

For the past few days I have been meeting with operators from Marsden Point Oil Refinery, these are the people who keep it running on the smell of an oily rag. These are the people who know this plant like the back of their hand, these are the first people you talk to before making decisions around the management of their machinery. Preferably, you would select the most competent of these individuals and advance them up the Refinery hierarchy, eventually entering management positions that will help steer the refining ship in an improving direction. One that helps our Nation secure its energy independence, evolve its business profile into the classification of regenerative, whilst producing high quality products for our market and the international market.

Sadly, the opposite of the above has been happening for years, and the question has to be asked, have the board and the major shareholders been doing this on purpose?

Below is a list of the statements that have been coming out of the Marsden Point Oil Refinery:

  • “Part of the reason our roads have been insufficiently maintained is because the refinery closed down bitumen production 18 months ago! This was done during the best time to fix the roads, and has left us reliant on the importation of lower quality bitumen”.

  • “CO2 collection has halted, which will add to the cost on food as the captured CO2 is used in food preservation and the carbonation of beverages”. Watch beer and wine prices increase!

  • “The oil refining capabilities of Marsden Point has, for the most part, contributed a diverse range of products that sustain our Nation. It is in the top quarter of refineries worldwide for its efficiency, quality of products, and environmental consideration”.

  • “The refinery has been mostly profitable in its endeavours, the COVID-19 response had a significant impact on its profits, however, poor management, and the seemingly purposeful advancement of incompetence into the ranks of management has contributed far more to its capitulation”.

  • “Some of the refined fuel coming in from overseas is of such low quality, it requires extra refining from Marsden Point itself”. This may pose a risk to our vehicles, what effect will the quality of the imported fuel have on our vehicles?

  • “If one hundred million were to be given to the current management team for a specified goal, ten percent of it would be used for the competent pursuit of that goal, ninety percent would be wasted”.

  • The reduction of carbon emissions reason is a myth, in a typical year we get thirty tankers of crude through here. After the conversion, it will likely increase to 165 ships of refined fuel a year, it makes no sense”.

  • “Management seem to be in a hurry to shut it down, they are looking to demolish the stack within the week”.

We don’t need to agree on other more complex issues to unite for this issue, we just need to come to one common-sense conclusion. Is it insane to remove the oil refining capabilities of our only piece of oil refining infrastructure, just after one “geopolitical crisis” and right before the unfolding of a new geopolitical crisis? If the answer is yes, and it should be history is on our side with this one, then you have come to the right place. It’s time to secure the Marsden Point Oil Refinery.

“FOR A SMALL ISOLATED NATION THAT, AT TIMES, FAILS TO MAKE IT ONTO THE MAP, ENERGY INDEPENDENCE IS NOT JUST A GOAL; IT IS A NECESSITY”.
